לְחִישָׁה

לְחִישָׁהf. (לָחַש II) 1) whisper; spell, charm. Y.Sabb.VI, 8b bot. (expl. לחשים, Is. 3:20) קדשייא דבר שהוא ניתן על בית הל׳ ear-rings, (namely) that which is put on the place where the whispering for charming purposes is done (the ear).בל׳ in a low voice. Gen. R. s. 3, beg.; a. fr.Y.Ber.I, 3d top, v. לְחָשָׁא). 2) hissing (of the serpent), emission of venom. Ab. II, 10 לְחִישָׁתָן לְחִישַׁתוכ׳ their (the scholars) hissing is that of ; Num. R. s. 3, beg.Trnsf. invidious talk, tale-bearing, insinuation. Pes.57a אוי לי מלחישתן woe to me on account of their talk; Tosef.Men. XIII, 21 בית לחישתן their mouth.Pl. לְחִישוֹת.
